The Nile · north3 days

The entire Nile forced through a seven-metre gap and thrown down into the gorge below, with the boat up to the base and the delta run for shoebill.

Uganda's largest park is a long drive north, so this is a three-day leg with a night either side. The ferry across the Nile at Paraa is part of the trip rather than an inconvenience.

Two boats matter here. The upstream run takes you to the foot of the falls, where you can climb to the top on foot; the downstream delta run is the country's best shot at a shoebill. Game drives on the northern bank hold giraffe, Jackson's hartebeest, lion and elephant.
